Principles of Ethics and Personal Leadership (PEPL) is a 16-hour course that provides EMS and Mobile Healthcare (MHC) practitioners at all levels with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively interact with patients and their families, other medical personnel, co-workers, supervisors and community residents at large. The course covers topics and skills in the following areas: 

  • Personal and professional values and beliefs

  • Understanding the concept of "service beyond self

  • Personal responsibility for ethical decision making

  • Strategies for conflict resolution

  • Serving as an ambassador for the profession, agency, and community

Through course presentation, dialogue, and learning activities, including written and video case studies, students will explore the importance of ethics and personal leadership, identify their leadership roles in civic life as individuals, family members, professionals, and members of the community, and practice the skills important to the exercise of personal, ethical leadership.

This course is appropriate for EMTs, paramedics, other mobile healthcare practitioners, and emergency responders. PEPL is accredited by CAPCE and recognized by NREMT. Upon successful completion of this course, students receive a certificate of completion, wallet card good for 4 years, and 16 hours of CAPCE credit.

There are no prerequisites for this course.  The course is appropriate for all individuals looking to increase their professional skills.

Bob Ziegler

Mr. Ziegler has over 39 years of active EMS as well as Fire Service experience in addition to administrative, supervisory and management experience on Regional, County and Statewide levels.  Mr. Ziegler has been a certified as an EMS Instructor for 30 years and a Licensed Paramedic for 29 years, both within the State of CT.  Mr. Ziegler is also a certified EVOC Instructor, State Certified Fire Service Instructor 1, Safety Officer and Fire Officer 1, is an American Heart Assoc. CPR Instructor Trainer and Regional Faculty as well as an OSHA Certified Instructor and is also POST Credentialed.

Megan Carey - EMS Instructor for CTTCI, Meg is a CT Licensed and Nationally Registered Paramedic as well as an EMS Instructor with over eight years of experience in EMS. Meg began her academic career at Fordham University fully intent on entering medical school. However, she quickly fell in love with Philosophy and French and graduated with a BA in both, garnering Phi Sigma Tau National Honor Society recognition for her academic performance in Philosophy along the way. After college, Meg spent nearly ten years working in the Fixed Income market in NYC during which time she earned (2) MBAs, Operations Management and Entrepreneurship, both from the Zicklin School of Business and again won Sigma Iota Epsilon National Honor Society recognition. Following a move to CT in pursuit of a better quality of life, Meg founded her own business, Ideas Incorporated, through which she provided operational support services to start-ups and small businesses. As life carried on, however, Meg’s thoughts began returning to her initial passion – medicine. In 2009, Meg spontaneously registered for an EMT class and has never looked back on the decision. She went on to earn an AEMT certificate in 2010, and later graduated valedictorian of the 2013 Yale New Haven Sponsor Hospital Paramedic Program. Meg recently spent more than four years working for a large commercial ambulance provider in CT.

Throughout the course, CTTCI will also have multiple other CT State Certified EMS Instructors provide both lectures and assistance with skills sessions.
